Vienna – mourning for Peter Zadek. The German theater director is dead, the 83-year old died in the night after a long illness.
Zadek was one derbedeutendsten deutschsprachigenTheaters and influential directors in the postwar period. As fearless provocateur desbürgerlichen theater education, he formed a half-century screen image of the German theater, many also certified him that he had made the world theater.
Zadek was born in 1926 in Berlin and emigrated after the 1933 takeover of the Nazis with his Jewish parents in England. After studying at Oxford and trained as a director in London, he returned to Germany in 1958.
His first artistic director was Zadek 1972 to 1979 at the Schauspielhaus Bochum. From 1985-1989 he served as director of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and from 1993 to 1995 and a director of the artistic director of the Berliner Ensemble.
